The Ultimate Cotswolds Road Trip: Hidden Gems and Must-See Villages

Topics Covered by this Post

The Cotswolds is a must-see destination for any traveller. If you’re looking for the quintessential English landscape, this area has you covered. From thatched-roof houses to authentic English pubs, huge stately homes, and historic castles, you can easily lose a week exploring the numerous towns on offer. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a two-month adventure around the UK, these must-see spots will inspire your journey.

    Stow-on-the-Wold

Stow-on-the-Wold is a great place to stop and explore for half a day. Originally a historic market town built to take advantage of the trade routes, it is now home to authentic English pubs (try the Kings Arms for a great Sunday roast), cosy second-hand stores, and local farmers markets held on the second Thursday of every month.

As the highest town in the Cotswolds at 800ft, what sets this town apart is the impressive layout of the town square and surrounding buildings, which are mostly historic townhouses. It’s a must-visit for photographers. Make sure to check out some of the local galleries and nearby walks as well.

    The Slaughters

The villages of Upper and Lower Slaughter are a fantastic detour for those seeking to escape the tourist trail. Despite the names, the term “Slaughter” actually derives from the Old English word “Slohtre,” meaning muddy place. Like many towns in the area, they remain largely unchanged for the last century, making them perfect for exploring.

The Slaughter Brook runs directly through both villages, offering a serene setting for an afternoon walk. In Lower Slaughter, don’t miss the 12th-century Church of St Peter and the Old Mill Museum. For a romantic touch, “Corpse Hill” road was once voted the most romantic street in Britain. Heading to Upper Slaughter? Simply follow the brook upstream for a scenic 25-minute walk. The Manor House is worth a visit at the end of your stroll.

    Chipping Norton

Considered the retail and business hub of the Cotswolds, Chipping Norton is an ideal spot to stop for coffee or lunch. As one of the largest towns in the region, it’s not only a great place to stock up on groceries but also a chance to rub shoulders with local celebrities. Notable residents have included Jeremy Clarkson, David Cameron, and Rachel Ward. The term “Chipping” comes from the Old English word “ceapen,” meaning market.

This town offers a glimpse into local life. Visit Bliss Mill for one of the best photo opportunities in the area. Free public parking is available on New Street and High Street, and the Wednesday markets are perfect for finding bargains.

    Great Tew

Located about five miles northwest of Chipping Norton, Great Tew is a hidden gem. This tiny village features thatched cottages, a village green, a local school, and a historic 16th-century pub. Walking around, you might feel like you’ve stepped onto a movie set—it’s that picturesque.

A stop at the Falkland Arms for a drink is a must. This 16th-century pub, with its traditional fittings, boasts a lovely beer garden in the summer and a cosy open fireplace in the winter. Overlooking the village is the Great Tew Estate, where you can park for free and explore the expansive grounds.

    Bourton-on-the-Water

Perhaps the most famous of all the Cotswold villages, Bourton-on-the-Water will keep you entertained for hours. Known as the “Venice of the Cotswolds” due to its location along the water and charming stone bridges, the town offers plenty to see. Highlights include the Cotswold Motoring Museum, the Dragonfly Maze, and the model village – a 1/9 scale replica of the town built in 1937. It’s a fun spot for all ages and a great place for memorable photos.

On the fourth Sunday of every month, the town hosts a farmers market, which is always worth a visit. You’ll also find excellent pubs and a variety of coffee shops along the High Street.
